Meet Your Guide: Mark Tanaka
Mark Tanaka is a spiritual teacher, somatic guide, and ritualist with over two decades of experience in trauma healing, embodiment, and Eastern spiritual traditions.
Born in the U.S. to a Japanese family, Mark has spent years reconnecting with Japan’s sacred landscapes—walking pilgrimage routes, engaging in temple practice, and listening deeply to ancestral memory and myth. He brings a rare capacity to guide people into deeper relationship with themselves, with spirit, and with place.
Mark’s teaching is rooted, relational, and revelatory. His work invites not just insight, but transformation—through the body, through presence, and through reverence.
"This pilgrimage is about remembrance. Of the sacred. Of beauty. Of who you are beneath the noise."
Testimonial
The Kyoto Sacred Pilgrimage was such a powerful and beautiful experience. I highly recommend it to anyone considering joining Mark on this sacred journey!!! We were taken to beautiful and potent sites, often going off the beaten path, to explore deeper into the potency and power of the true sacred site behind the superficial façade that most tourists experience. More than once, I found myself dropping into energy portals of remembrance and communion with the beauty of the moment in places that felt familiar. Mark was an awesome guide and so helpful from beginning to end, through all the various logistics of the trip. Introduction into Shintoism, some of its deities, and proper protocol and etiquette in approaching and behaving at the sacred sites were also offered, all to help enrich our experience. It was a magical trip that I will always cherish!
- Kat S.
My wife and I were fortunate to join the very first Pilgrimage offered by Mark. We had never traveled to Japan before, largely because of concerns about the language and cultural differences. Having a guide who spoke Japanese and deeply understood the customs gave us the confidence to finally take the leap.
What we discovered was a rich blend of the modern and the traditional. It was truly fascinating to see how spirituality permeates so many aspects of Japanese culture. We spent about a week in Kyoto, where Mark and his team guided us through a series of sacred sites—Buddhist temples and Zen shrines, some dating back over a thousand years. Each day felt like a progression into deeper beauty and meaning, with each site more breathtaking than the last.
But this was far from a typical tourist experience. The insights shared at each location brought the spaces vividly to life—wisdom that could only come from deeply intuitive and spiritually attuned guides. Helen and I both felt the journey exceeded every expectation we had.
Equally powerful was the connection we formed with our fellow travelers—a community of people who, like us, are committed to personal and global transformation. We returned home not only enriched by the experience but also with new friendships we continue to cherish and nurture.
